- Genre: Western
Film: Dances with Wolves
Synopsis: Lieutenant Dunbar, a Civil War soldier, unexpectedly finds himself developing a bond with a band of Lakota Native Americans.
One of my all time favourites, Dances with Wolves is a tale of freedom, a story of our deepest desires depicted through the main protagonist John Dunbar. Starring Kevin Costner, Dances with Wolves is a not so typical Western, however it could be more accurately described as an in depth character study. There is something incredibly beautiful and cinematic about this film, so, if you have not seen it, get watching!
- Genre: Sci-Fi
Synopsis: A young man becomes part of a strange but revolutionary science experiment where he must test and assess an artificially intelligent female robot named Ava.
Truly one of my favourite Sci-Fi films, one that I only had the chance to see for the first time within the last year! Quite simply, it blew me away, at times scared me, but constantly kept me gripped and at the edge of my seat. Furthermore, the cinematography was stunning thanks to director Alex Garland. A must watch.
- Genre: Thriller
Film: Mystic River
Synopsis: The death of Jimmy’s (Sean Penn) daughter Katie, leads Sean (Kevin Bacon), a police officer to a murder that took place over 25 years ago whilst also reuniting 3 old friends during unfortunate circumstances.
Greatly suspenseful and mysterious, Mystic River will take you down a road of confusion in the quest for the films answers. Whilst being a thriller, Mystic River also delves into the morality and past of the three main characters, making for a thought-provoking quality thriller directed by Clint Eastwood.
- Genre: Horror
Film: 28 Days Later
Synopsis: A team of survivors must find safety in the aftermath of a mysterious virus that has unleashed desolation upon the United Kingdom.
My personal favourite zombie film, 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Cillian Murphy, is a genre defining classic, paving the way for many modern zombie flicks. Furthermore, if you live in London it is truly a spectacle seeing the city that quiet and lonesome.
- Genre: War
Film: Paths of Glory
Synopsis: General Mireau forces his troops into an impossible mission against the Germans to capture a post. When his men refuse to walk into a clear death trap he accuses them of cowardice, leaving only their commanding officer Colonel Dax to defend them.
Directed by the great Stanley Kubrick, not much more is needed to be said! A masterpiece and one of the greatest war films ever made. To think this was released in 1957 is truly mesmerising as over 60 years has passed and not much comes close to this.
